Numeracy Lesson
Name-AngleLanguage and Literacy Lesson
This lesson is intended for Grades 6 and 7, in which they interacted with a poetic picture book, written as an ode. It is dedicated to Black Americans and celebrates their significant accomplishments. It references racism and honors those who suffered and died because of it. It also alludes to lyrics and lines expressed by Black American heroes to underscore the passion and perseverance of artists, athletes, activists-and all Black Americans. This lesson is important because ultimately, black history is all of our history. Not only is it important to remember the achievements of Black people, but it’s important to recognize the things that make us both unique and alike and to celebrate diversity. Diverse teams are the best way to foster understanding of the needs of people from all backgrounds. Also its important to integrate different subjects within each other (Social studies and English language arts). This is important for reading development because students are learning how diverse different written texts can be, but also are learning how to extract information from text.

In this lesson, students were asked to make predictions about the book they are currently studying, The One and Only Ivan. Students were encouraged to use prior knowledge and information from the text to make their predictions. They were also asked to consider the author’s purpose and the themes of the book. Through discussion and collaboration, students shared their predictions and supported their ideas with evidence from the text. The teacher then provided feedback and guidance to help students refine their predictions and deepen their understanding of the novel. By making and revising predictions, students were able to actively engage with the text and develop their analytical skills.
