The BCTC created these standards for BC educators who hold a teaching certificate. These standards guide the practice, conduct, and competence of BC educators. Reflecting on these standards, one standard really sticks out for me. “Educators value and care for all students, and act in their best interests” (https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/education-training/k-12/teach/standards-for-educators). Teachers are responsible for fostering the emotional, intellectual, physical, and social development of students. They are responsible for the emotional and physical safety of their students. I take this very seriously, as I believe my most important goal for myself as a teacher is the well-being of my students. With my prior volunteer experience with teens, there were many who struggled with identity and mental health, and sometimes there were cases that I was responsible for their physical and mental health in that moment. Therefore, I think that involving myself in professional development opportunities and volunteer experience can give me knowledge and practice to better abide by these standards.
