Curriculum | Building Student Success – B.C. Curriculum (gov.bc.ca)

The BC Curriculum is created around these three core competencies; communication, thinking, and personal and social. Today we live in a world of constant change, thus education moves along with this change. The intent of this current curriculum is to teach the whole-child with holistic competencies. This is different than past curriculums, which have focused on learning content rather than learning competencies.

“The redesign of curriculum maintains a focus on sound foundations of literacy and numeracy while supporting the development of citizens who are competent thinkers and communicators, and who are personally and socially competent in all areas of their lives” (curriculum.gov.bc.ca). The BC curriculum has come a long way to implement a more holistic approach to education, however personally for me one thing is missing. The curriculum still puts literacy and numeracy at the forefront of education, but as someone with background in physical education, I would like to see physical literacy also at that forefront. Like literacy and numeracy, physical literacy is an important aspect of education, specifically because physical activity is the number one treatment for mental health and mindfulness. Without knowing how to move our bodies properly, we are not able to prepare our minds for learning literacy and numeracy. They all work together, thus should be included in that educational foundation framework that the curriculum highlights.
